Itinerary
Arrival in the city of Puerto Maldonado, known as the Capital of Biodiversity. Start your authentic Amazon adventure with a 25-minute boat ride, cruising down a clay-colored river, the Bajo Madre de Dios, to the hidden Hacienda Concepción lodge. Settle into your elegant wooden cabin, raised off the ground by stilts, or your comfortable room, then head to the Casa Grande dining room, where a generous buffet lunch awaits before exploring the depths of the jungle on foot, starting from the Eco Centre. Take a hike along the Concepción trails, which showcase nature within the property, for an introduction to the intricate ecosystems of the Amazon basin. Located in a protected area of the Tambopata National Reserve, in an old cocoa and rubber plantation, Hacienda Concepción is home to a primary and secondary forest inhabited by exotic fauna and tropical plants.
At dusk, watch with your Explorer Guide the enchanting transformation of the rainforest during the Night River boat ride, as daytime animals and birds give way to species adapted to the shadows of the night. You will be able to observe alligators hidden on the banks and the star constellations of the southern hemisphere. In the evening, enjoy an a la carte dinner, inspired by the native ingredients of the Amazon. Return to your room or cabin to listen to the songs and croaks of the forest at night.
This morning visit Lake Sandoval, a crystalline mirror of water found within the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most diverse areas on the planet. Walking along a sunny wooden walkway that leads to the lake, scout guides regale travelers with stories of unexpected encounters with poisonous frogs and camouflaged creatures. Board a carved wooden canoe to calmly paddle through the mangroves and then navigate Lake Sandoval, flanked by beautiful palm trees. This serene lake is inhabited by thousands of species of birds, the endangered river otter, howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, turtles and black caimans. Return to Hacienda Concepción in time for lunch.
In the afternoon, take a 20-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to climb the exciting Canopy Walkway, a safe and sophisticated system of ecologically constructed suspension bridges 344 meters (1,135 feet) long, connected by eight platforms and two panoramic observation towers. Originally built for our NGO, Inkaterra Asociación, to carry out conservation projects, the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway offers an unforgettable opportunity to observe the Amazon forest from the treetops and understand its colossal dimension. Ascend the first dizzying tower 38 meters (124 feet) above the ground, with your senses alert for toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth.
At dusk, under the cover of darkness, explore the forest on foot as your senses sharpen to detect movements among the vegetation and the wild sounds of the jungle. Back at the hostel, a la carte dinner awaits you from 7:30 p.m.
Enjoy your last morning waking up to the cacophony of jungle sounds in this pristine wonder of nature, while parakeets chatter from the trees and monkeys swing from the branches. Breakfast is served in the Casa Grande, and check-out is at 10:00. Depending on the time of your return flight today, you can request lunch (additional cost applies). Board your wooden boat for a 25-minute return cruise along the meandering Madre de Dios River. You will make a short visit to the Butterfly House before arriving at the airport.
Peru has the largest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen in the Butterfly House, which showcases the diversity, beauty and adaptability of these fascinating insects.
